The main cultural events in Mikkeli are the Mikkeli Music Festival and Ballet Mikkeli. The focus composers at this year`s Music Festival are Shosta kovich and Beethoven, and Artistic Director is Valery Gergiev.
The Salmela Art Centre in the beutifully-preserved village around Mäntyharju Church is one of the finest gems in the Mikkeli Region. The exhibitions are housed in an old parish hall dating from the 1850s, the old chemist`s, post office and vicarage. The lanscaped grounds with their bowers and sculptures link the exhibitons. The buildings have been revitalised for culture use according to the UNESCO guidelines, with respect for their original atmosphere.
